UNIQUE FOOD STOPS
Les Gourmandes Cheese Delicatessen & Chocolate
In 1998, Monique Roussel and husband Andre Martineau imported their first sheep from Holland specifically for their milk. The family had owned sheep since 1992, but were raised for their meat. The following year a small-scale cheese production began at La Bergerie Aux 4 Vents, making them one of Atlantic Canada's first sheep's milk cheese producers in New Brunswick. It all started with a cheese named La Sieur de Duplessis. This artisinal cheese became Canada's first “tomme” cheese. Made from unpasteurized sheep's milk, La Sieur de Duplessis was a firm cheese, with a golden-brown patterned rind which gave it a rustic look.
In 2005, Monique opened Les Gourmandes Cheese Delicatessen & Chocolates in downtown Moncton on November 28th. Our own line of chocolates was incorporated into the boutique as well as the importation of a wide selection of cheeses from Europe and around the world. Today at La Bergerie Aux 4 Vents, we continue to make cheeses, which we carry in store. Geai Bleu is our blue cheese with a mild creamy texture, great for both beginners and seasoned cheese lovers. Champ Dore is a washed rind “tomme-style” cheese and is a local favorite.
In 2015, Jonathan Martineau, youngest son of Monique and André took over the family business at Les Gourmandes and moved the location to the 529 Main Street where it can now be found. After a trip to Italy sparked Jonathan's love for charcuterie, the importation of Italian and Spanish meats began. Our love for travel is equivalent to our love for food, and allows us to search the world for “best in class” products that stand out for their superior quality ingredients and exceptional flavors so we can share them with you. Come on in and try them for yourself!

Liquid Gold
When Myrna and Bill lived in the Southwestern United States, a marvelous thing happened. They found love in a bottle of stunning, authentic extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). Determined never to settle for commercial grade oil again, they brought what they discovered back home to the maritimes and opened Canada's first EVOO tasting bar in Halifax in 2010.
Now there are three more Liquid Gold Tasting Bars and 7 Liquid Gold Boutiques across the region.
Liquid Gold Olive Oils & Vinegars was a shop like no-other in 2010. Stainless steel glistening everywhere, protecting nature's best from heat, air and light. EVOO from different countries, balsamic vinegars and condimento from Northern Italy. A place to taste, make your selection, then bottle on site. It was, and is, an artisan's delight.
We began to teach foodies to look for "fresh" as the first sign of great EVOO. That means looking for harvest dates.
We open doors to the idea of magnificent EVOO from both sides of the equator.
We teach "strippagio" - the way to taste really fresh EVOO. We teach how really great tasting oil is part of a healthy diet, not just a more flavourful one.
And as always, we are proud to offer the proof of our promise - displayed in the clues and technical evidence that Liquid Gold products are exactly, and honestly, as advertised.
Trust is something that has to be earned.

Wheaton's
In 1981, Garnet Wheaton began growing balsam fir trees in Berwick, Nova Scotia. To help cover the costs of their children’s orthodontist bills, Garnet’s wife, Kay Wheaton, started selling decorator tins and her own handcrafted gift items out of their home. Soon, their first cash register was needed, and placed on top of the family’s washer and dryer.
The Wheaton’s quickly found themselves in need of more space. Garnet began renovating their barn into a unique country store, which would be the original Berwick location. The barn was officially opened for business in September 1990 and four years later, an addition was added. What had started out as a little store was certainly expanding rapidly!
Their eldest son, Seth, began building pine shelves and step stools for the store in the basement of their home. Seth’s projects grew rapidly and expanded into a woodworking shop next to the original Berwick store. The woodworking shop is now a production facility that employs around 20 people who produce pine, oak, and maple furniture.
With the success of the Berwick store, locations were opened in Moncton, New Brunswick in 1996, Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia in 2001, Fredericton, New Brunswick in 2007, Dartmouth, Nova Scotia in 2012, Halifax, Nova Scotia in 2015 and Saint John, New Brunswick in 2019. As well, the Cider Press Café was added to the Berwick location in 2003. In May of 2017, the new location of the Berwick store and Café was opened after the original buildings perished in a fire the year before.
“We hope you and your family continue to enjoy your Wheaton’s experiences and enjoyed learning about our story! Although we started out small, we have been blessed with so much over the years! It’s amazing how many great people we’ve been able to work with. Today, you can find Garnet and I helping in the stores or lunching at the café!” – Kay Wheaton

Corn Crib
Corn Crib Natural Foods was incorporated in 1975 and began as a smaller store in Moncton than the one you know now. Although records are not easy to find, Corn Crib Natural Foods is likely connected to both the back-to-the-land movement of the 1960s and the health food movement of the 1970s and 1980s when people started to question whether there was any health value in food products that were made by big food corporations and sold in supermarkets.
For decades, the Corn Crib Natural Foods was the only health food store in Moncton and it has been a trailblazer since it opened. In its earliest days, the Corn Crib sold mostly bulk foods like oats, flour, and candied fruit — and of course spices — but gradually evolved with the health movement, as demand for healthier products grew.
The first line of supplements carried at the Corn Crib was Swiss Herbals. We still carry some Swiss Herbal products today, but our stores now carry over 1000 kinds of supplements from over 100 brands.
In the 1990s, the Corn Crib was known as the place to go in Moncton to purchase body building supplements! And, up until the early in the first decade of 2000s, we were one of the few stores in Moncton to carry gluten-free products — and a popular source for both products and support.
In 2012, a Corn Crib store was open in Saint John. It specializes in supplements and lifestyle. The Saint John store also provides space for natural health practitioners to offer treatments.
2013 was a monumental year for Corn Crib Natural Foods. The store effectively doubled its size in April 2013 to allow expansion of all of its lines — whole foods, supplements, health and beauty, and cleaning and lifestyle products. In 2013, Kelly McCarthy, who was behind the expansion, took over ownership of the Corn Crib.
Kelly McCarthy also became a Registered Holistic Nutritionist (RHN) at the Corn Crib in 2015. In January 2015, Rachelle Wood also a RHN, joined the Corn Crib and now works mainly from the Moncton store, but also sees clients in the Dieppe and Saint John stores.
In May 2016, Corn Crib Natural Foods opened its third location at Bien être Gallie Wellness in Dieppe, selling supplements and a selection of products from all its product categories to complement the wellness centre.
Through all of its changes and growth, some things are constant at Corn Crib Natural Foods — we will always be in constant evolution as new understandings about health science, trends, and natural products begin to emerge.
